Growth in Christ is different for everyone. Like life, growing in Christ has hills and valleys, highs and lows. Times when you’re going to feel invincible in the Lord and others when you’re hanging by a thread and you don’t know where God is. The truth is that we are the ones who are inconsistent. God is forever the same, infinitely constant. I’d like to share some ways I’ve found my way back to Christ and Grown into a new level of intimacy in Him. Daily spiritual nourishment in any way, shape, or form is what will propel you into a deeper relationship in Christ.
I have gone through so many devotionals, most, honestly I haven’t finished. I have about 2 or 3 that I will use depending on what I’m feeling. But I’ve found that when life gets busy and those 5 minutes get consumed by something else that’s when I begin to drift. The time you spend in the word, will impact your growth in Christ. Read the Word
Reading the word goes hand-in-hand with devotionals and my next tip. It’s one of the simplest ways to grow in Christ. If you’re just beginning, start with the Gospel of John. Each book of the bible was designed for a different purose. the Gospel of John was written for new believers and believers alike and those who are gentiles. (If you’re not Jewish, you’re a gentile) So, pray for understanding, and then go crack open that dusty bible and read a personal love letter written just for you. Trust me, you’ll grow in Christ.
Hearing the Word
One of my favorite ways to get my daily nourishment is by listening to a preaching, an audio book, or the bible itself. I have a long commute to and from work so I love to use that time in traffic refreshing my mind and my spirit in stead of overthinking my problems and struggles. Traffic somehow induces overthinking so, I consciously set my mind on things above. Maybe you have down time during your work breaks or your work out, try to find a time that maybe you can multitask with your ears open. Listening to edifying audio books like The Esther annointing has strongly impacted my growth in Christ. It brings me to revelation and its another way for God to speak to my hear.
You cannot grow in any relationship with out communication. Prayer is our communication with God. It’s our way of talking to God about our lives; our concerns, our wants, our needs, the needs of our loved ones. It’s also a time that opens the door for God to speak to us. If you need help in prayer i have a special printable bookmark with a prayer guide on it for just $2 in my shop. In addition, I have listened to the audio version of Fervent by Priscilla Shirer– it’s for seasoned prayer warriors and new believers alike(you can click the picture below). click here for the bookmark.
Worship is such a beautiful gift and time that we are able to spend with God. Worship just brings me closer to Him and reminds me of everything He’s done for me. Often times, I begin my day with Hearing the Word, and then Worship in my car on the way home. I love to listen to Tasha Cobbs or BJ Putnam.
Find your Secret Place
“But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.”Matthew 6:6 NLT
Ever heard of that scripture? This is one of the most important things for me in my growth in Christ. Finding my secret place took a little while, but my car has become my secret place. Your secret place should be somewhere that doesn’t have distractions, and isn’t a place where people will hear you confess you deepest darkest secrets. It should be a place you can feel comfortable crying your eye balls out and shout your praise.
Being transparant with not only with God but also your self will significantly help you Grow in Christ. In order to be Honest with God, you have to be honest and real with yourself.
We must ask those hard questions. Am I taking responsibility for my actions? Am I hiding pride in my heart? Am I motivated by envy? These are all common things for people to struggle with. But don’t be content with your sin. Ask God to purge you with hyssop. To cleanse you and forgive you.
However, the refining process may not be a fun one. We are often tested and refined my our circumstances to remove those impurities from our hearts. But God can only do this process when we allow him. When we invite Him to search our hearts and remove all that which offends Him it is so that he may finish His work in us.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”Psalms 139:23-24 NLT
Seek Godly Guidance and Mentorship
I cannot tell you how seeking the right kind of people has impacted my growth in Christ and how much it will likely impact yours. I remeber crying our to God one night begging Him to give me friends, mentors, and mostly spiritual mothers. i was lonely and struggling to understand what God was doing in my life, and sometimes, i still do, but now im not only mature but God answered my prayer– He gave my many spiritual mothers, sisters in christ and much more. I have a mentorship that is brutally honest with me, checks up on me, and encourages me. If you don’t have this in place, my next tip will lead you to it.
Seek out Godly wisdom. Never stop chasing it. When you’re passionate about Godly wisdom, nothing will stop you from continuing your growth in christ. Listen intently to what the elders of your church are speaking. Listen intently to what the voice of God is speaking to you, and cling to those who speak wisdom into your life.
I have been saved for 7 years in August. There have been many different seasons in my walk with Christ, both positive and negative. I’ve gone through seasons of doubt, anger, temptation. Also seasons of growth, fresh anointing, joy, and confidence. In each valley, I’ve had to find my way back to Christ and figure out how I was going to get my joy back. That’s what it’s like being an imperfect creation in an imperfect world. But it’s how we respond to outer influences that determines how we will grow in Christ. Your persistence and endurance will be tested, but that’s how we grow.
